Around 58,000 professors of 213 Central universities, including IITs, will get full funding from the Centre

In a major decision by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, the benefits of the 7th Pay Commission were extended to 7.58 lakh teachers of the Central, State universities and aided colleges.

Around 58,000 professors of 213 Central universities, including IITs, will get full funding from the Centre, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar said.

In an effort to attract talent into academics and improve the quality of education in the country, seven lakh professors, assistant and associate professors in aided colleges and State universities will get the benefits, Mr. Javadekar said.

States will get the Centre's support and all the benefits will be paid from January 1, 2016.
“We must give a good salary package so that the existing talent is retained in the academic sector, compared to attractive packages in the industry,” Mr. Javadekar said. The Centre will bear ₹1,400 crore per year on this, while the States will have to pay out an additional ₹8,400 crore.

Minister for Law and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said, 119 IITs, IIMs, NITs, and IISERS will also get the benefit.
